Event is FINISHED
On this, the third of our new weekly walking tours for small groups of between 6 and 10 participants, you will discover the magic of historic Fort Canning Hill. Over the last 700 years it has been transformed from the home of the ancient kings of Temasek to one of the seats of the colonial government (Raffles was very fond of it!), to a military base during WWII, to its current incarnation as a public park with beautiful art installations.
When Fort Canning was forbidden - the history of old Singapore. Tues March 14's small group walking tour
Starting at the foot of the hill, we will first explore some of our island's oldest landmarks such as the Armenian Church, Central Fire Station and Masonic Lodge. We will then climb up through the European burial grounds to hear the stories of some of Singapore’s notable 19th century personalities. Following which, we will wander through the lush oasis of Singapore 's first Botanic Gardens with its fascinating fig trees, to be carried away by stories of ancient springs and bathing princesses while visiting the shrine of the Malay Kings.
Our final stop on the Hill will be to learn about the dramatic events which took place in its underground bunker in the days leading up to the Japanese invasion in 1942.
We will finish our tour in the cooling air of the nearby National Museum of Singapore, where we will learn more about the history and architecture of Singapore's oldest museum.
What are small group Walking Tours?
have a maximum of 10 participants but also need a minimum number of 6 to go ahead; if we don't have enough people we will inform those who have registered (& refund their payment) by the evening before at the very latest. But we hope they will always run!!
Please note that the cost of these tours is a little higher as we are keeping the number small. The quality will be however very high; see comments below from our last one at the end of January which was a prototype for this new series:
"I would like to thank you for the tour yesterday, it’s been a wonderful morning! Your guide is amazing and so expert about history".
"I just wanted to let you know that my aunt had a brilliant time yesterday. She couldn't say enough about the tour and how great your guide was. Thanks so much! I will certainly recommend you".
"Your guide was WONDERFUL! We all enjoyed her. I'm looking forward to the next tour."
